Choose your Life ! by Victor-Lam-art Choose your Life ! by Victor-Lam-art
------------------------------
Which one would you pick ?
------------------------------
I felt a little more philosophic this time ..almost political ... so this is about the gap between rich and poor, in a fictional world in which the rich ones have litterally risen up to split themselves from the poor people...
Although they are seperated I wanted to make their lifestlye and environment look more cheerfull and enjoyable than the grey, clean, regulated cities of the rich ...

I hope I did it correct and you feel the same !
GO FOR POOR ! ITS MORE FUN TO DRAW ! :)

------------------------------

I started this more than a year ago with a doodle at school.. it took finally about 40 hrs to finish...

I used the Spaceship of the "District 9" movie !
credit goes to whoever designed it and the moviecrew !

I generally do take my textures from www.cgtextures.com/ (cgtextures.com)

It's obvious which one I would pick--the upper life. But I probably wont have enough money to live up there...

interesting (or intentional?) that you used a District 9 object here, and the socioeconomic motif of your pic is pretty much spot on with the new movie from the same director.

I used the District 9 space ship because it just fitted perfectly to how I imagined the cities belly would look like ..
If you are talking about elysium then its just coincidence because when I did this picture no one knew about this movie.
But now that you are saying it it really is an awesome coincidence :D

I find it pretty mean by saying "No ref used"! Those UFO/city things in this picture are altered copy/paste images from the District 9 UFO. And I'm sure you took other images to frankenstein your picture together.
And don't forget; that UFO (and other images)you used were done by other artists and they most likely spent lots of time on their work as well. The least thing you should do is credit the images you use. You like the images? Why not supporting the original artist?

I see your point but but look, Its not meant like that...
The District 9 UFO's as well as a lot of other stuff are textures which I used at the beginning of the painting to set an idea .. they are altered but yes you can call it frankensteined if you like..
Generally if I take parts of some one elses picture I usually do credit them. But I dont even know who designed the ship or did the work there.. So If I would add the line "Ships are altered version of District 9's ship" whats the use ? One in 10000 would maybe think he wants to rewatch the movie.. Maybe you can explain to me whats the benefit if I add this line ? Does anybody feel insulted ?
Furthermore I get most of my textures from cgtextures.com. This sort of mattepainting technique saves loads of time thats why a lot of artists use it...
I also used a lot of my own taken photos and you don't have to credit cgtextures, although I do in most of my other images.
But since you asked for it.. I did remove the "no ref used" although it was meant like.. I did start with myown sketch and didn't take someone elses idea. So I used literally no reference but textures. anyways that might be confusing to some so I removed it.
I hope I didn't insult you or anyone else..
thx for sharing !

I apologize if I come across rude, but I see a lot of people using someone's work for their own artwork and don't mention it. This even happened to me a couple times. There was even someone who took my drawings and recolored them and claimed that he did it from memory!:(

It is okay using reference pictures if it helps, but at least it would be nice to mention it, or make a link to the original image. If it is your own textures, of course this doesn't need to be mentioned.
Another thing that should not be forgotten are the lawsuits.:/

With the UFO; If I would have used it in my drawing, I would mention it that it belongs to District 9. As much as I know that UFO was done by Greg Broadmore [link] .

You've got way more skill than I have and your brushwork is awesome. But seeing the guy in shadow, even with his loose clothes and cool lounge setup, distracted me from from seeing how his world is more fulfilling than the metropolis above him. Some brighter and louder colors or just a little bit of soft light (from say, lanterns) would've strengthened the idea for me. Looking past that, the work nicely captures the theme you set up. That's just my two cents.

Because it is from District 9. The artist used the Prawn-mothership [link] . Would be nice from the artist at least to mention what he/she used for that image.

The blue of the water balances the cityscapes quite nicely. Glad you finished it. There are a few elements that stick out and seem awkward.

Will you be creating art from the point of view from the skyward city? It would be an interesting contrast towards the warm colours of the earth grounded city. Very compatent and well-developed piece :)
